Psychoanalytic analysis examines male grief in Chekhov's story, highlighting social factors affecting emotional expression.
This paper analyzes Anton Pavlovich Chekhov’s short story “Misery” from the perspectives of psychoanalytic and gender theory, aiming to examine the relationship between the individual experience of mourning and the social conditions of its articulation. Drawing on Sigmund Freud’s distinction between mourning and melancholia, the research demonstrates that the failure of the “grief-work” in the character of Iona Potapov is not merely an intrapsychic phenomenon, but rather a consequence of the absence of an adequate intersubjective response. The analysis employs W. R. Bion’s concept of the “container” to explain how the lack of an empathic Other leads to the accumulation of unprocessed affect, as well as R. W. Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity, which enables an understanding of the social constraints on emotional expression. Particular attention is given to the final scene, where communication with the mare functions as a minimal form of symbolic adaptation, in line with Donald Winnicott’s theory of transitional objects. The paper concludes that mourning in “Misery” is a relationally and socially conditioned process, and that the absence of empathy produces a specific form of male suffering on the threshold between mourning and melancholia.
