Modelling distribution patterns of discontinuous mountain permafrost on a regional scale are a basic tool for planning human activities in these especially sensitive environments (Haeberli 1992). Furthermore, the simulation of permafrost distribution for past and future climatic conditions, in view of ongoing warming trends and their effects on natural hazards in high mountain areas, has become increasingly important. The present contribution discusses the basic concept of mapping and modelling mountain permafrost distribution in the eastern Swiss Alps.
