The microhardness‐load characteristics for five alkali halide crystals are studied. The equation H = 1854 ad n −2 appears to be valid for all samples, all crystals having the same value of n but different values of a. The results are generalized to all alkali halide crystals with the NaCl‐type lattice. The physical interpretation of the observed characteristics is discussed and a correlation between the microhardness and surface energy considered.
