Limitations of current intelligence tests form the basis for the proposed cognitive processing alternative to the conceptualization and measurement of human ability. A theoretically based cognitive processing system of assessing human functioning, which has been proposed (Luria), operationalized (Das), and examined under many conditions, is evaluated according to its validity, diagnostic and prescriptive power, comparability, standardizability, and psychodiagnostic utility. The extent to which the planning, attention, simultaneous, and successive cognitive processing model meets the evaluative criteria suggests that the approach has potential as an alternative to current IQ tests, is relevant to diagnosis, and has implications for interventions.
