Field instructors provide a major contribution in preparing students for a professional role. Faced with the competing demands of practice and education, and little time for either, the field instructor must find ways to manage this instructional endeavour. This study investigated the teaching methods and content field instructors used and found that they (n=29) used teaching methods for expedience and chose content focused on getting the job done, rather than selecting methods and content for educative purposes. One implication of this research suggests that providing field instructors with learning theories and techniques may assist them in becoming more effective educators.
