Recent research on support for women candidates has provided evidence of the importance of gender to that support, but has failed to account for the possibility of differing levels of support. The research reported here tests the hypothesis of gender difference in support for female candidates and also examines its context. Analysis reveals significant differences in the levels of support men and women give to women candidates. Further, these differences between the sexes increase as the level of office being sought increases.
