Notes 1 The acronym ICT is used throughout as a generic term encompassing IT, computing and ICTs, apart from when referring specifically to industry where it is more common practice to use the term IT. Individual authors have used a variety of terms and we have tried to reflect these within this editorial. 2 In the UK, the government-funded UK Resource Centre for Women in SET offers an interesting move away from previous approaches by recognizing the need to tackle some of the most difficult issues such as culture within the workplace, and working with employers to identify and change practices that are inadvertently perpetuating gender segregation (http://www.setwomenresource.org.uk). While there are clearly specific issues relating to gender and ICT these have become linked with women and SET in general, recognizing that in the field of employment especially there are many commonalities across all these sectors.
