The author received his Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Rochester, his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Columbia University, and studied at Galton Laboratory, University College, London. For twenty-four years he was a chemist at Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research. After three years service overseas as operations analyst with the Army Air Forces, he received the Medal of Freedom. Now a consultant at the National Bureau of Standards, his recent work has been in the design and interpretation of experiments.
