A method is outlined by which it is, in principle, possible to compute the average autocorrelation function of density fluctuations in the earth's atmosphere, assuming that the distribution of light intensity in the "seeing" image of a star is known. The presentation is in two parts, the first being devoted to a qualitative description of the events which occur. The second part contains the mathematical theory.
