Recent technical advances are enabling catalysts to be studied under reactive conditions. In his Perspective, Campbell highlights such an in situ study by Hansen et al., who show how barium promotes the activity of a ruthenium catalyst that catalyzes the ammonia synthesis reaction. Their approach should be widely applicable to studies of catalysts, promising exciting advances in the next few years in our understanding of catalysis.
Charles T. Campbell (Fri,) studied this question.
