Online sections of a public speaking course at a community college were compared with traditional sections. The primary reason for selecting the online section centered on the convenience of few visits to campus and flexible time to complete work. A higher proportion of females and individuals wanting to know their classmates selected the traditional format. Students electing the two formats did not differ significantly in communication apprehension or self perception of public speaking abilities either before or after the course. Expert evaluations of students’ public speaking ability at the end of the course did not differ significantly for the two formats.
