A study finds that steric hindrance affects luminescent properties in triphenylamine compounds, suggesting new applications in materials science.
Introducing steric hindrance into planar bridged triphenylamine-containing double pentagons and a heptagon can induce the molecule to form deep bowl-shaped compounds. These highly positively curved compounds demonstrate distinct luminescent properties depending on the pendent aromatic rings with good fluorescence intensity in solution and powder states. The molecular bowl can assemble with fullerene C60 to form a host–guest complex as evidenced by crystallographic analysis.
