Review summarizes advancements and challenges in lithium–iodine batteries, suggesting future research directions.
Lithium–iodine (Li─I 2 ) batteries have garnered increasing attention owing to their unique advantages, such as abundant iodine reserves, high electrochemical reversibility, environmental benignity, and cost‐effectiveness. Nevertheless, they still confront challenges including sluggish iodine conversion kinetics, polyiodide shuttle effect, and lithium dendrite growth. Starting from the performance requirements and challenges of cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, and separators/interlayer materials, this review systematically summarizes the innovative breakthroughs in rechargeable Li─I 2 battery technologies and delves into their working mechanisms and core challenges. Finally, guidelines and future research directions for Li─I 2 batteries are proposed. This review is anticipated to deepen the understanding of Li─I 2 battery modification strategies, clarify the core scientific issues, and further promote their practical advancement in the field of advanced energy storage.
