A radiometric calibration procedure applicable to wide-band VHF SAR systems is described. It is based on using near-resonant dipoles located at different heights above the ground surface. The radar cross section of the dipole and surface reflection interference (multi-path) is used to compute the frequency-averaged radar cross section. Analysis of calibration experiments in 1992 and 1993 is used to verify the described models and the calibration procedure. It is shown that reflections from sub-surfaces may be detected and used to estimate layer depth. The responses from 16 foot trihedral reflectors are also analyzed for comparison.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
