To successfully perform the necessary migration towards a sustainable civilization, it is required we exploit both consolidated and emerging technologies. Within this context, the emerging smart grid has numerous components, and is closely intertwined with the concept of the internet of things (IoT). Both are necessary for the transition to a high renewable penetration electricity generation matrix, by making use of improved data acquisition and processing to optimize systems' operations. In this work, we focus on energy use in buildings, as they are one of the biggest end energy usage sectors. In particular, we identify what energy resources are available within buildings, and what power system services they may provide, whilst exploring how IoT facilitates or enables each of these.
