Optimal control problems associated with formation reconfiguration of multiple spacecraft with docking and undocking capability are considered. The basic approach is to decompose the optimal formation reconfiguration problem into several simple optimal control problems. Explicit solutions of the minimum-fuel and minimum-energy control problems for reconfiguration of simple formation patterns formed by simultaneous docking of multiple spacecraft are obtained. Simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
