McVean (1961 a) has described the growth of Scots pine seedlings obtained by direct seed sowing on different vegetation and peat types in the field, with and without ground treatment and the application of phosphatic fertilizer. Actively growing and checked seedlings were often obtained in close proximity under the same treatment while the response to applied phosphate varied considerably according to the peat type and to other unidentified factors. It was to investigate this phenomenon more closely that the present series of pot experiments was undertaken. Chemical analysis of peat and seedlings was carried out by methods employed by the Nature Conservancy Chemical Service, Merlewood Research Station, Grange-overSands, from whom details may be obtained.
