Puberty in female mammals is commonly defined as the time at which reproduction first becomes possible, whereas sexual maturity is achieved when an animal expresses its full reproductive potential Puberty will not occur until an animal has achieved a size and level of development commensurate with a high likelihood of successful reproduction. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to suggest that physical growth and physiological development are intimately related and that an effect on physical growth will influence physiological development.
