Nitrat wird pyramidalisiert: Eine modulare [3+3]-Selbstassoziation dreier Metallionen und dreier N,N-Liganden führt zur Bildung molekularer Schüsseln oder Kronen mit syn,syn,syn-Konformation (siehe Bild). Diese Strukturen, Analoga von Calix[3]arenen, können als Anionenrezeptoren dienen. Im Falle von NO3− als Gastion wird dessen Struktur durch „Herausdrücken“ des Sauerstoffatoms aus der Ebene verzerrt.
