Representation of the free-surface is crucially important to obtain the full wavefield in elastic wave finite-difference modeling. An adaptive free-surface formulation is proposed from the view of limit theorem, based on an averaged medium method. This formulation contains two frequently-used medium parameter modified methods as extreme Poisson’s ratio cases and nearly no CPU cost is increased. The numerical tests show that under the same temporal and spatial samplings, this formulation has higher precision than two frequently-used medium parameter modified methods for a wider range of Poisson’s ratio.
