Does a return to social drinking after abstinence affect cerebral atrophy, cognitive performance, and biochemical factors compared to continued social drinking in light to moderate drinkers?
May warrant caution on resumed drinking in light drinkers; leaves open need for randomized confirmation of cognitive effects.
SUMMARY The present study is an extension of earlier work with a group of 65 light to moderate drinkers (Cala et al 1,2 ). The aim was to investigate the effects of a return to social drinking after abstinence, and that of continued social drinking uninterrupted by a period of abstinence, on cerebral atrophy as seen on CAT scan, cognitive performance and biochemical factors.
