Focusing on Turkish–Arab relations, this article examines the origins of Turkey's negative image in the Middle East. In particular it will shed some light on the complex interplay of actions and perceptions that is behind this image and the way in which geostrategic constraints and stereotypical images have reinforced each other. The study will argue that on both the Turkish and the Arab sides deeply entrenched stereotypes have been reinforced in the course of the political history of the twentieth century. It is this historical burden that has so far prevented Turkey from playing more successfully the role of a mediator between Europe and the Middle East.
