A photocell incorporating a channel electron multiplier is described, with design features permitting operation in the vacuum ultraviolet region of the spectrum. The technique, when applied to the measurement of photoelectron energy distributions by the ac modulation technique, eliminates the previous limiting factor, the photocell capacitance effect. Current performance is illustrated, and development potential indicated.
