Single crystal plates of Al with a thickness of about 1 mm oriented for easy glide are deformed in tensile tests. In addition the orientation of the Burgers vector of the primary system is chosen so that in stage I the deformation is carried mainly either by edge dislocations (E-type crystal) or by screw dislocations (S-type crystal). This follows from the fact that the slip line length is so large that one of the dislocation components escapes through the plate surface. The flow stress for E-type crystals is found to be about 1/3 higher than that for S-type crystals independently of temperature. For E-type crystals the strain-hardening curve begins practically with the transition to stage II and violations of Schmid's law of critical resolved shear stress are observed: in E-type crystals deformation can start in a secondary system which has more screw character than the primary one.
