We report on molecular dynamics simulations of the motions of ions confined in a Penning Trap. Two sets of calculations are made with the geometrical and physical conditions similar to that of the Mainz-Stockholm Penning trap. One calculation deals with 50 ions of 7Li+, whereas the other considers 50 ions of 40Ar18+. The aim of the paper is to study and compare the temperature dependence of the structural properties, in particular phase transitions to crystals, of systems of low and highly charged ions. Differences in the phase transition for singly charged and highly charged ions in the Penning trap will be discussed.
