Reviews the equiripple and least-squares filter design methods. The trade-off between the two methods is illustrated with numerical examples, where ideal filters are approximated by both equiripple and least-squares FIR filters. The authors explain the motivation behind the classical filter design methods, and then extend this reasoning to develop new design criteria for certain multirate filter design problems.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
