This article explores the association between on-the-job embeddedness (OJE) and job hopping (JH) among employees of the service sector in India. Using the job embeddedness theory and conservation of resources theory, this article simultaneously investigates the mediating role of affective commitment (AC) and the moderating role of organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) in the relationship between OJE and JH for employees in the service sector within a single research framework. A self-structured questionnaire was distributed to 344 employees of Indian service organisations via Google Form, and the collected data were analysed by using partial least squares–structural equation modelling. The outcomes show that AC has a substantial mediating role in the association between OJE and JH among employees in the service sector of India. It was discovered that the OCB moderated both the relationship between OJE and AC and the indirect relationship between OJE and JH via AC. This research enhances the existing literature on the moderation–mediation mechanism of OCB and AC in the relationship between OJE and JH while offering managerial implications for enhancing employee retention in the service industry through these factors.
