The energy cost of pulling handcarts (‘thela’)

Transporting loads using an indigenous handcart (the ‘thela’), is a common occupation in many parts of India. Energy expenditures and heart rates under different operational conditions show that pulling a loaded cart represents very heavy work. The ergonomic features of the handcart are also discussed.
