Abstract High performance liquid chromatography of various C2 - C24 fatty acids was performed with their p-bromophenacyl, p-nitrophenacyl, p-chlorophenacyl, and 2-naphthacyl esters. All separations were accomplished with two types of reversed phase columns with the eluent consisting of an acetonitrile: water gradient. For all derivatives tested, the separations were well defined and analogous, although certain esters eluted together as single peaks. Quantitative results indicate that the limit of detection in the present study is two picograms of n-caproic acid and 10 picograms of arachidonic acid as their p-bromophenacyl esters.
