Conventional and alternative automotive fuels are analyzed and discussed in this article. The refining of gasoline, its nature as a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, and many of its characteristics are examined. The differences between gasoline and oxygenate-containing fuels are outlined. Ways of improving and modifying diesel fuels are explored, and the effects of sulfur on fuel is discussed. Engine tests are conducted using mixtures of diesel fuel with vegetable oils and ethanol, separately, but more are needed to define their applicability better.
