This paper aims to assess the magnitude and frequency of flooding over the past 200 years within sub‐catchments in the middle River Tweed basin, Berwickshire, Scotland. The recurrence interval of floods as represented by short‐term gauged discharge records (post‐1948) can then be placed in a longer term context. A range of historical sources is consulted and four chronologies recording dates of major flood occurrences in each sub‐catchment are produced. Individual floods are ranked in relation to other known events on the same river and, where possible, estimates of recurrence intervals provided. The seasonality and associated hydro‐meteorological conditions, which generated the floods, are also assessed.
