Case report reveals hyperpigmentation as an adverse effect of long-term minocycline therapy, emphasizing shared decision making.
An 80-year-old man developed diffuse blue-gray hyperpigmentation of both legs after 15 months of minocycline therapy for recurrent prosthetic joint infections. As this drug is frequently used for suppressive antibiotic therapy, internists should recognize this adverse effect to avoid unnecessary diagnostic work-up. The chances of developing this side effect increase with prolonged drug exposure. Clinicians should engage in shared decision making with patients before initiating therapy.
