Pilot project assesses effects of group therapy and physiotherapy on sexual pain and quality of life in premenopausal women.
Introduction Present recommendations state that sexual pain/penetration disorders should be handled by a multidisciplinary team, but the studies on the effect of multidisciplinary treatment are limited. Objective The aim of the planned study is to assess the treatment effect of group therapy combined with physiotherapy on sexual pain and pain catastrophizing. Further to assess the effect of the treat-ment on sexual function, sexual distress and quality of life. Methods We are planning a prospective, longitudinal, observational pilot project. Approximately 30 wom-en with a diagnosis of sexual pain/penetration disorder will be included. Participants must be premenopausal. The study group will participate in weekly group therapy-based sessions combined with individual physiotherapeutic interventions over a period of 6 to 12 months. Different validated patient-reported outcomes measures will be given to participants at three timepoints; baseline, after the last group-therapy session, and at three-month follow-up after end of treatment. Outcomes include measures of sexual pain and pain catastrophizing as well as sex-ual function, sexual distress, quality of life, childhood sexual abuse, and patient satisfaction. Inclusion of participants will start in the beginning of 2026. Changes in total score from baseline to end of treatment and follow-up period will be analysed with paired t-test for categorical variables and with chi-square test for continuous variables.
