When children transfer into new schools, educational and psychological consultants have unique opportunities to help educational personnel develop preventive interventions. In this article we review risk factors for children undergoing school transitions and we identify ways of dealing with these potential difficulties. A preventive intervention developed for high-risk transfer children is presented to illustrate how consultants can work with school systems to facilitate optimal and positive outcomes for children who are vulnerable for developing a number of problems following a school transition.
