Case report demonstrates successful long-term psychosexual therapy outcomes in a patient with sexual and psychiatric challenges, indicating potential therapeutic benefits.
Introduction Sexual health concerns are common, distressing and impact many aspects of an individual`s quality of life. Sexual function and dysfunction are dependent on interpersonal factors (experiences and interactions with close relationships throughout life), psychological factors (related to the individual`s cognitive processes, personality, and mental health), as well as biological and social factors. The initial assessment is a crucible for developing an individualized treatment plan. Objective The ex-PLISSIT model is an assessment protocol that is independent of the suspected aetiology of the sexual difficulties/concerns. Methods Psychological diagnostic tools for personality traits, mental comorbidity and interpersonal issues are often needed. In sex therapy we may include different treatment modalities: psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioural techniques, insight-orientated psychodynamic therapy, couple therapy, mindfulness, psychiatric medication, or pharmacotherapy for specific sexual difficulties. Results The patient started therapy when he was 42 years old, with a high school education, but recently unemployed. He introduced himself as an anxious person. He was pessimistic, with low self-esteem, disappointed with the past short relationships with women. He had severe emotional distress caused by different sexual difficulties. He showed high motivation and a good insight into the dynamics of his problems and demonstrated good communication skills. Conclusions This long-term therapy has lasted fifteen years. The patient is satisfied with the progress he has experienced, has good self-esteem, is in a stable relationship, and his sexual concerns are not present anymore. Disclosure No
