Identifies Lepidoptera wing scale properties for optical computation in hybrid biological reservoir systems, suggesting new design possibilities.
This paper identifies a specific gap in physical reservoir computing literature: the functional properties of Lepidoptera moth wing scale nanostructure, diffraction geometry, electrostatic charge distribution, and chitin photonic structure have not been proposed or analyzed as an optical computation layer in any physical reservoir computing architecture. We describe the physical basis for this proposal, provide supporting calculations derived from measured biological parameters, identify the prior work boundary relative to Khairnar et al. (2026), and outline a testable framework for a hybrid mechanical-optical biological reservoir system.
