Purpose Due to the characteristics of modern construction projects, such as large scale, long construction period, huge investment and complicated technology involved, project success relies heavily on close cooperation among various stakeholders. Particularly, knowledge sharing among these stakeholders can determine the performance of construction projects. However, few studies explored the impact of inter-stakeholder knowledge sharing on project performance in the construction industry. This research, therefore, aims to explore the impact of inter-stakeholder explicit and tacit knowledge sharing on project’s overall performance (i.e. project management performance and project cooperation performance) in construction projects. Design/methodology/approach Using the questionnaire survey method, a total of 191 valid samples were collected from Chinese construction professionals with various backgrounds, followed by descriptive and structural equation modeling analyses. Findings The results indicate that inter-stakeholder knowledge sharing in Chinese construction projects is at a relatively high level, with the level of tacit knowledge sharing exceeding that of explicit knowledge sharing. The project’s overall performance was also perceived as relatively high by the Chinese professionals. Inter-stakeholder explicit knowledge sharing and tacit knowledge sharing are strongly correlated, and they have a strong and positive impact on project’s overall performance in construction projects. Specifically, inter-stakeholder tacit knowledge sharing can improve project management performance more significantly, while inter-stakeholder explicit knowledge sharing is more conducive to achieving a higher level of project cooperation performance. Originality/value This research is unique in revealing the impact of inter-stakeholder knowledge sharing on construction project performance. The results can help various stakeholders in construction projects share their knowledge more effectively to further improve project performance.
