Spectroscopic studies reveal how surfactant structure impacts porphyrin inclusion in micelles, suggesting new applications in material science.
Spectroscopic and kinetic studies have been performed to investigate the inclusion of cationic porphyrin monomers into micelles formed by anionic surfactants with different chain lengths. From the results, a possible mechanism for the porphyrin inclusion process can be proposed, highlighting the prominent role of the apolar inner domain of the micelles, and corroborating the scenario in which the hydrophobic effect is the main driving force for the macrocycle inclusion in these confined systems.
