Surveillance reveals increasing obesity and decreasing overweight among children, highlighting risk factors.
Introduction and Objective: Since 2007, the Italian Ministry of Health has implemented “OKkio alla SALUTE”, a national surveillance system coordinated locally by ATS Insubria, the local health authority in Varese and Como, to monitor weight status, dietary habits, physical activity and school initiatives promoting healthy lifestyles among eight-year-old children. Methods: Anthropometric and behavioural data were collected from a cluster sample of third-grade students across 52 primary schools. Trained ATS operators measured children’s height and weight using standardised anthropometric instruments. Results: A total of 796 children (52% M) participated in the 2023 survey. Compared with earlier rounds, the prevalence of overweight decreased to 16.1% (16.8% in 2019 and 22.7% in 2012), whereas obesity increased to 9.6% (4.9% in 2019 and 7.1% in 2012). 2023 OR of a child being at least overweight if at least one parent is overweight: 2.94 (p < 0.05). Table 1 summarises the key items collected from children and parents which were used to evaluate weight status and associated behavioural determinants. Conclusion: Surveillance highlights persistent overweight and obesity trends and identifies key determinants of risk. ATS Insubria joined “Cities for Better Health” programme that is an integrated school, family and municipalities approach to promote healthy behaviours and mitigate the future burden of chronic degenerative diseases.
