Research reveals digital payment systems drive e-commerce growth in developing economies, indicating strong implications for online retail success.
Digital payment systems have emerged as a key driver of E-Commerce growth, particularly in developing economies such as India. The research focuses on the role of digital payment methods such as UPI, mobile wallets, debit and credit cards, and net banking in the rise of the online retail industry. Secondary data were gathered from Reserve Bank of India papers, government publications, industry reports, and scholarly literature between 2018 and 2025. It is demonstrated that digital payments facilitate more convenient, safe, and trustworthy transactions for consumers, thus pushing them to shop online more frequently. Besides extending the reach of financial services, government initiatives and better digital infrastructure have enabled adoption in the rural and semi, urban areas. The report also states that making digital payment infrastructure more robust is not only vital for the continuity of E-Commerce growth, but also the transition towards a paperless economy.
