The Archaeological Monitoring was instigated through a fieldwork change control (document ref: 1EW03-FUS-EV-NTE-CS03CL06-000006) to the Archaeological Recording at Wellwick Farm. The ultimate impact area of the groundworks was smaller than initially designed and included the area of the haul road and welfare facility. The overburden was stripped by the construction sub-contractor to a depth of 0. 3m below current ground level in accordance with the requirements of the change control issued for the Archaeological Monitoring. The Archaeological Monitoring recorded three ditches in plan which appeared to extend into the mitigation area. The ditches will be archaeologically sampled when the haul road is removed, and the area stripped to the archaeological horizon throughout. The watching brief was partly within a wider area subject to archaeological excavation.
