One hundred years ago Karl Wilhelm Bädeker, the discoverer of transparent conductive materials (TCM), transparent conductive oxides (TCO), and transparent semiconductors, died. On this occasion the conference Transparent Conductive Oxides –Fundamentals and Applications (TCO2014) was held at Universität Leipzig. In this paper, Karl Bädeker's life and death are retraced and the discoveries Bädeker made in Leipzig are reviewed and put into perspective.
