Review finds uterine balloon tamponade effectively manages postpartum hemorrhage, addressing maternal mortality globally.
Maternal mortality remains a significant global health challenge, with approximately 223 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births reported in 2020. In pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal 3, countries aim to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio (MMR) to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030, ensuring that no country exceeds twice the global average. Achieving this ambitious target requires an unprecedented annual reduction rate of 11.6%, a level seldom realized at the national scale. Despite these challenges, evidence-based medical and public health interventions exist that can prevent the majority of maternal deaths, including improved access to skilled birth attendants, timely management of obstetric complications, and the use of life-saving interventions such as uterine balloon tamponade for postpartum hemorrhage. Strengthening healthcare systems, enhancing training for healthcare providers, and implementing context-appropriate strategies are critical to accelerating progress. This review emphasizes the urgent need for coordinated global and national efforts to scale up effective maternal health interventions. By prioritizing evidence-based practices and ensuring equitable access to quality care, countries can significantly reduce preventable maternal deaths and advance toward achieving the SDG 3 target by 2030.
