Structure Sense V: Before Formalization — Human Structure Sense, Topological Intuition, and the Return of Structure-First Thought Civilization Physics — Series: Structure Sense This article develops the fifth part of the Structure Sense series by arguing that human cognition does not begin with formal systems. Before mathematics, logic, institutional language, or explicit theory, the mind already encounters the world through structure: continuity, boundary, enclosure, rupture, connectedness, persistence, and transformation. The central claim is that topology is the closest mature formal neighbor of this deeper human capacity, but not identical with it. Human beings are not secretly doing formal topology before language. Rather, topology gives disciplined mathematical expression to several invariants that pre-formal cognition already tracks: what remains connected, what stays continuous, what is enclosed, what persists through change, and what breaks. The article develops this argument through several linked mechanisms: Human cognition begins with pre-formal structure perception before explicit symbolic formalization. Topological intuition names a loose but real sensitivity to continuity, connectedness, inside/outside relations, rupture, and transformation. Formal topology is useful because it formalizes invariants preserved across continuous deformation, but it should not be treated as the whole of structure itself. Modern frame failures occur when formal systems continue producing classifications after their correction channels to reality weaken. AI hallucination, model collapse, echo chambers, and institutional frame lag all show what happens when generation continues without sufficient structural correction. A viable post-collapse cognition must return to structure-first thought: beginning from real invariants and reality contact, then formalizing afterward. This article clarifies why the Structure Sense framework is not merely a theory of cognition, but a broader account of how thought remains coupled to reality. Formal systems are valuable only when they preserve the structure they are meant to describe. When they lose that contact, they can remain fluent, orderly, and institutionally powerful while becoming structurally false. The return of structure-first thought is therefore not a retreat from rigor, but a restoration of rigor to its proper ground.
