Examines pre-stroke cardiovascular risk and its effect on cognitive decline in stroke survivors, suggesting significant implications.
Stroke survivors have an elevated risk of cognitive decline and dementia. It is unclear how pre-stroke atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk influences post-stroke cognitive decline and dementia. We examined the association between pre-stroke American Heart Association Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease EVENTs (PREVENT) 10-year ASCVD risk score (which includes age and sex) and post-stroke cognitive decline and dementia, independent of pre-stroke cognition.
