Purpose This review aims to examine how artificial intelligence (AI), particularly Generative AI (GenAI), shapes career trajectories by influencing individuals' engagement with learning, developing skills and adapting to evolving workplace demands. Design/methodology/approach This study conducts a systematic literature review employing Scientific Procedures and Rationales for Systematic Literature Reviews guidelines with the theories contexts characteristics and methodology (TCCM) framework and bibliometric analysis to explore the transformative role of AI in shaping career pathways. Findings Analysis of 49 studies indicates increasing scholarly attention to the use of GenAI as a tool for delivering personalized learning experiences tailored to individuals' interests, career goals and evolving skill requirements, particularly after 2022. The majority of the reviewed studies show how AI could potentially assist people in improving critical thinking, problem-solving and adaptability, which are essential to sustain career success in transforming workplaces. Originality/value This research synthesizes fragmented studies using a combined TCCM and bibliometric methodology, contributing to the growing body of knowledge on AI in the context of careers. By identifying essential concepts, research contexts, methodological trends and gaps, it offers a comprehensive knowledge of potential future research agendas.
