Desk review reveals health challenges in older adults, highlighting effective strategies for improvement.
Older people play a pivotal role not only in Namibian society but globally, with many households relying on their contributions for survival ranging from caring for orphaned grandchildren to providing essential income support. Despite this, older adults are frequently excluded from development programmes and face discrimination in accessing essential services, particularly health care. This study employed a desk review of empirical data sources, complemented by descriptive analysis, to explore the challenges faced by older adults in Namibia and to assess institutionalised strategies aimed at improving their health and overall well-being. The findings reveal that interventions introduced by the government and civil society organisations targeting older adults contribute significantly to their well-being. These interventions have also improved the quality of life of older persons, particularly in terms of accessing essential services such as health care, clean water, and improved sanitation, among others. The study recommends strengthening support for organisations that provide safe spaces where older people can meet, access information, and receive social and institutional support.
