Analyzing cooperative models for economic empowerment in Maharashtra, highlighting governance and innovation implications.
The cooperative movement has significantly influenced rural development and participatory governance in India, particularly in Maharashtra’s sugar belt. This paper examines the evolution of cooperative institutions in Maharashtra with special reference to the Shrigonda region and the contributions of Shri Shivajirao Nagwade. It analyses the development of cooperative sugar factories, the legal framework governing cooperatives, and their role in economic empowerment. The study highlights how cooperative models integrate agricultural production with industrial processing, enabling farmers’ participation in economic decision-making. It further examines challenges such as governance issues, financial sustainability, and technological adaptation. In the context of Viksit Bharat 2047, the paper argues that strengthening legal frameworks, transparency, and innovation can revitalise cooperatives as instruments of inclusive development.
