Higher education plays an important role in the development of a nation. It helps in building skilled human resources, promoting innovation, and supporting economic growth. India has set a national goal of becoming a developed country by 2047 under the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. To achieve this goal, higher education institutions such as universities and colleges must play a key role in developing knowledge, skills, research, and innovation. The present study examines the role of higher education institutions in strengthening skills, innovation, and institutional capacity in India. The study is based on secondary data collected from government reports, educational statistics, and research publications. Data related to higher education enrollment, innovation, start-ups, and research funding has been analyzed in tabular form. The findings show that expansion of higher education, promotion of research, digital learning, and industry collaboration are important for building a strong knowledge economy. The study concludes that strengthening higher education institutions will be essential for achieving the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
