Comprehensive review reveals advantages of fast disintegrating tablets in managing depression and anxiety disorders.
AbstractFast disintegrating tablets (FDTs) represent an innovative oral drug delivery system designed todisintegrate rapidly in the oral cavity without the requirement of water. These dosage forms areparticularly beneficial for pediatric, geriatric, and dysphagic patients who experience difficultyswallowing conventional tablets. Sertraline Hydrochloride, a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor(SSRI), is widely prescribed for the management of depression, obsessive–compulsive disorder, panicdisorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder. The formulation of SertralineHydrochloride as Fast Disintegrating Tablets offers several advantages including improved patientcompliance, faster onset of therapeutic action, and potential enhancement in drug bioavailability. Thisreview summarizes the pharmacological profile of Sertraline Hydrochloride and discusses theconcept, formulation approaches, and advantages of Fast Disintegrating Tablets. In addition, variouspreparation techniques, commonly used superdisintegrants and excipients, preformulationconsiderations, and evaluation parameters are reviewed. Furthermore, recent advancements andchallenges associated with the development of FDT formulations are highlighted.
